We have been working in partnership with
Astrium for the past five years funded by the French Space Agency,
CNES and also, the European Space Agency, ESA. Astrium is Europe's leading satellite manufacturer, with industrial sites across Europe, and world leader in the design and manufacture of satellite systems for all space applications.
The FOGs will equip satellites such as
PLEIADES (France),
PLANCK (Europe),
COMS (Korea) and the well-known
GALILEO (Europe). In 2001 a cooperation program was set between France and Italy to develop
ORFEO, an Earth observation dual system with metric resolution. While Italy looks after development of the radar component
COSMO-Skymed, France is working on PLEIADES, the optic component, scheduled for launch in 2008. While Planck (Europe), an ESA scientific mission to study the origin and evolution of the Universe is scheduled for launch in 2007. COMS (Korea) is a geostationary satellite with many applications in the fields of experimental communications, ocean monitoring and meteorological observations. GALILEO is Europe's own satellite navigation system providing accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. It is inter-operable with
GPS and
GLONASS, the two other global satellite navigation systems.
